Updated: Jan 13, 2022

Introduction: Who Are Social Influencers?

Social media influencers are people who have a large following on social media. They are usually celebrities, athletes, or popular figures in the entertainment industry. These influencers are often paid to promote products or services to their followers.

Often social media influencers are people who use social media to create a personal brand. They have a large following on social media and they use this following to promote themselves or their content.

There are many different types of social influencers, some are popular because of their work in the entertainment industry while others are popular because of their work in the fashion industry. Some people might have very niche interests, but they still have a large following on social media.

Social influencers are people who have a big impact on social media. They are able to influence the thoughts and actions of others through what they post. There are many factors that make someone influential in society. These include: personality type, sex, age, occupation and how often they use social media.

It is said the first social influencer was Gary Vaynerchuk. His family owned a wine store in New Jersey and he used his knowledge of wine to create a YouTube channel that would teach viewers about wine. Gary has since turned this into a successful business, which he runs with his dad, by adding wine tastings and events to the mix. He started out as an online personality but has since built his own brand by writing books, hosting podcasts, and speaking at conferences.

Faux Social Influencers

Faux social influencers are not real people. They are social media accounts that are created by an agency or individual who is paid to promote products, brands, or services. Faux social media influencers could be said to be fake accounts. They mimic the behavior of a human account and pretend to be someone they're not. Sometimes they have a backstory and other times they don't - but either way it's all for show. Social influencers have become an important part of marketing campaigns in the past few years because they can reach so many people at once with their content. It's hard to know if you're dealing with a real person or not when scrolling through your feed on social media, which is why faux influencers have become so popular in recent years.

Sometimes celebrities or owners of brands are too busy to maintain their social media platforms so they hire others to represent, or even pose, as if they are the celebrity or brand itself. Business marketing has been creating brand mascots and faux spokespeople ever since business marketing first evolved. As society evolves the mascots and faux spokespeople often need to evolve as well. What would have been considered normal advertising years ago often is seen in more negative ways as society becomes more conscious and compassionate.

In the last few years more companies and brands have been called out for things that show they are out of touch with the morals of their consumers and society itself.

Negative influencers

There are many influencers that thrive off of bad behaviors and acting out to capture peoples attention. From creating sex tapes and leaking them on purpose to creating fake dramas so they can headline in gossip reports is common for many as a way to monetize off of the attention in the media cycles. Societies focus of attention has a price tag on it and it is marketed as fast and hard as it can be. There is a lot of controversy surrounding these influencers because they have the power to influence people's opinions and actions. Some people argue that these influencers should not be able to influence people without being honest about what they are promoting or who they actually are. Others argue that this is just another form of advertising and it is up to the consumer if they want to buy into what the influencer is selling. Some would say it is up the the general public to maintain their abilities to tell the truth from illusions and lies. Others would say it is a slippery slope that can lead to con artists being in control of swaths of the publics opinions and beliefs.

When People are Starved for Attention and Try to Become an Influencer.

It's becoming more common to see people desperately trying to become social media influencers for attention, and or, to somehow find a sense of self worth in being liked or talked about by others. So many people crave to go viral. There is a growing trend in society for people to try to become a celebrity and gain attention and money from that status. Some would say that is because there have been many people, with no real talent other than to get attention, gaining success and money due to the media itself marketing them as if they are some form of current news society needs to know about. More critical responses would be, that those supposed celebrities are used as vehicles to keep the masses reactive and unconscious to what is actually taking place in the world, that certain elements would prefer the public fail to notice or have the time to consider what is actually going on in society. If you keep the public reactive and unable to keep attention spans longer than a few seconds people will fail to be able to string together thought constructs long enough to make sense of themselves. Short and fast gets the attention. Longer content is often overlooked. We are speaking of the power of influence over society after all.
